#FridayFeature: Morgan Petersen

This week’s Friday Feature is the extremely talented Morgan Petersen.

To say Morgan was a popular choice for our first ever edition of #FridayFeature would be a slight understatement.

She received 84% of the votes when we asked our email subscribers who they would like to see featured this Friday.

This isn’t the first time she’s been featured on WTP though. Last year we were lucky enough to have her contribute a couple of great articles about her time spent photographing National Parks in the United States.

Landscapes and wildlife

When you scroll through Morgan’s Instagram her passion for the outdoors really shines through.

I had been to this location about a dozen times because I had heard it was a great spot for eagles. Not once did I see any. We decided to go on a small hike which isn’t too far from this spot and as we were driving by we saw so many eagles! The one time in my life that I didn’t bring my camera of course. We watched for a bit and it was was so amazing. The eagles were eating clams, flying around, catching fish, and fighting. It quieted down so we decided to go back and get my camera. An hour later and we’re back at the spot and there were even more eagles! There were 25 that day. I was hoping for a fight shot but it didn’t happen. We went back the next day, this time there were only around 5 eagles and they weren’t very active. After 8 hours of watching and as we were about to leave, this finally happened.

The overwhelming sense of being deep in nature is present in each photo. She doesn’t use overpowering editing techniques to achieve the wow factor. It comes from knowing she has discovered these scenes after hiking off the beaten path and finding some unspoilt corner of the world that leaves us wanting to know more about it.

Q: Tell us a little about your photography journey so far. How did you get into photography? What age were you when you first picked up a camera?

A: “I’ve had an interest in photography ever since I was little, my mom had a Minolta that she’d let me use sometimes. Being able to use up a roll of film and wait for them to be developed was so much fun to me! That interest progressed as I found my love for hiking about 5 years ago when I moved to Colorado. I wanted to preserve the places I’ve been with a photograph and be able to share them with others who might not be able to go to the places I do.”

Q: You are clearly a very talented landscape and wildlife photographer. But if you had to choose just one, which would win? Landscapes or wildlife?

A: “Thank you!! I would definitely choose wildlife photography. In my opinion it’s a bit more challenging because you have to find the wildlife and it might not always be in the best lighting or with the perfect background. It’s amazing to be able to observe the animals, I could sit and watch them all day. You gain a lot of respect for nature just by being out there with them.”

Q: You seem to travel around a lot, so our last questions for you are: Where is the best place you’ve ever been to for photography & what is currently number 1 on the bucket list?

A: “Quite a few locations come to mind but my favorite place I’ve ever been for photography is Banff National Park, Canada. The Canadian Rockies are stunning and there’s an abundance of wildlife throughout the park.

On my bucket list? So many places but Alaska is the number one place I want to go to! It seems like an amazing place to explore.”

I think it’s fair to say that when it comes to portraying the outdoors and nature, Morgan is one of the best!

  1. Morgan is my granddaughter and when she was just a very young girl, she would come to visit in Indiana and would ask if she could walk down the road and take pictures, but I didn’t see many of them. When I did start seeing her work, it was beautiful. I love the wildlife and nature and her photography brings it to life. Keep up the good work, Morgan.
