There’s a huge range of lenses out there for all systems, so it’s not always easy to know which is the best lens for travel photography
In the video above Mitchell Kanashkevich goes over his opinion of what the best lens for travel photography is.
As with all things photography related, a lot of it comes down to personal choice and what works best for each individual person.
Things like budget and the type of photography you do are a huge factor in the final decision, but generally you will need something versatile so you can cut down on the number of lenses you travel with, and also something that is appropriate for your style.
Like Mitchell says in the video, most of the time you will find a zoom lens more beneficial than a prime due to its versatility. As a travel photographer the last thing you need is to be carrying around a whole bunch of primes.
Choosing photography equipment for any assignment or trip isn’t the easiest thing in the world but you’re choices will ultimately dictate how your end images turn out.

I’m a professional travel photographer, and I’ve been living the digital nomad lifestyle since 2016. I make money by working on client assignments, selling stock photography and helping other photographers by sharing my experiences on this website. I move around at my own pace (I hate fast-paced travel) and like to spend a few months getting to know each place I base myself in.
My writing and photos have been featured on industry leading websites such as Digital Photography School, Atlas Obscura and the world’s leading underwater photography resource The Underwater Photography Guide. I authored an eBook called “Breaking Into Travel Photography: The complete guide to carving out a career in travel photography” that has been published on Amazon. My stock images have also appeared in ads promoting destinations and companies that sometimes has been a surprise, even to me. But I guess that’s the nature of stock photography, you never know who will license them!
I’m always happy to connect, so feel free to reach out!
