Becoming a travel photographer transformed Elia Locardi’s life…
A lot of us live in a society where it’s normal to finish your studies, buy a house, get married, buy a nice car or two and settle down.
The pressure that puts people under when they 1) don’t really want to go down that path and 2) are not in a financial position to do so, means it’s easier than ever to find yourself living a life you’re not happy with.
That’s exactly what happened to Elia Locardi.
After taking out multiple loans to be able to afford the ‘perfect’ life he and his wife thought that had achieved success.
They had a nice house, nice cars, nice clothes and stable jobs.
But it all came to a head when the financial crisis hit. They were left paying off loans that had tough conditions attached to them for a house that was no longer worth what they paid for it.
Turning to travel photography
After years of photographing for clients, Elia decided to use his skills behind the camera to create images for himself. He and his wife travelled abroad for the first time in years and instantly realised the things they experienced on that trip were worth more than any of their possessions.
After narrowly avoiding becoming bankrupt by only a few days, they realised that they wanted to spend their lives exploring what the world has to offer and started travelling indefinitely.
Cutting down on their expenses and figuring out how their jobs could be done remotely was their first task.
Both of them continued to work with their existing photography and graphic design clients whilst on the road. To date, they have travelled to well over 50 countries and Elia now runs travel photography workshops all over the world.
Listen to Elia’s amazing story of being almost bankrupt to becoming a successful location independent travel photographer in the video above, it’s truly inspirational.
